In July 2006 we (visual artists Joost Stokhof and Yuri Veerman) went on a hitchhiking trip through Europe. Our trip started at the biggest Flower Auction in the world, the Aalsmeer Flower Auction, from where we searched for a truck driver that was willing to take us along abroad. The first two years we managed to catch rides to Florence and Stockholm from where we hitchhiked to other European cities. Without a strict route or plan we travelled for a few weeks, always looking for the next city we could reach within a day.
While these first two trips were more like an unusual way of going on a holiday mixed with an occasional painting on a wall or the selling of drawings on the streets, in 2008 we’re suddenly invited to do a small exhibition in Hamburg at a clothing store called Woolwill. From that point on we turned our trips into missions and our travelling gradually became a platform to produce work in the form of pictures, murals, zines, books, drawings, posters and exhibitions. Each trip is an experiment to see what the possibilities are for the next one.
Over the years these missions evolve as we search for new ways of making work within the limits of our way of travelling and the time we have. Within these limits we try to work with what we find on our way, and allow ourselves to change our plans at any moment, any year.
